THE R 100 CS STORY: A CULT CLASSIC

by Jerry Aldini

BMW’s Motorrad division has long been associated with producing innovative motorcycles, combining luxury, engineering precision, and cutting-edge technology. The R 100 CS, introduced in 1981, was part of BMW’s "R series," which included a variety of motorcycles designed for a wide range of riders. The R 100 CS, specifically, was a sport-touring bike that blended BMW’s hallmark comfort with impressive performance.

The R 100 CS was built around BMW’s 980cc boxer engine, a design that remains a defining characteristic of the brand's motorcycles to this day. The air-cooled, two-cylinder, four-stroke engine produced approximately 70 horsepower, allowing the R 100 CS to achieve a top speed of 120 mph (193 km/h). This was an impressive feat for a touring motorcycle of its time. The R 100 CS also featured a five-speed transmission, a shaft drive system for reduced maintenance, and advanced suspension technology that made it a smooth and comfortable ride on long journeys.

Unique Features of the R 100 CS

The BMW R 100 CS had several distinctive features that set it apart from other motorcycles on the market at the time. One of the most notable characteristics was its fairing, which was designed to enhance aerodynamics and provide a more comfortable riding experience. The fairing reduced wind resistance, helping the rider maintain a more stable and efficient cruising speed.

The R 100 CS was also equipped with a large 22-liter fuel tank, which provided a generous range for long-distance riding. The bike's frame was designed for rigidity, ensuring superior handling and stability even at higher speeds. The ergonomic seating and controls made it an excellent option for both long-distance touring and everyday use. BMW’s commitment to engineering quality was evident in every aspect of the R 100 CS, from its build quality to its precision handling.

Another standout feature of the R 100 CS was its advanced (at the time) braking system. The motorcycle was equipped with a dual-disc front brake and a drum rear brake, providing excellent stopping power. These features, along with the bike's reliable build and comfortable ride, made the R 100 CS a favorite among both sport-touring enthusiasts and everyday riders.

Production and Sales Numbers

The BMW R 100 CS was in production from 1981 to 1984. While exact sales figures for the R 100 CS in the United States are somewhat difficult to pinpoint, estimates suggest only 176 units were sold in the U.S. during its production run. The motorcycle's blend of comfort, performance, and advanced features helped it gain a loyal following, particularly in markets like Europe and North America, where riders were looking for a versatile and reliable sport-touring bike.

The BMW R 100 CS has become highly desirable among motorcycle collectors for several reasons. First, it represents a time in BMW's history when the company was pushing the envelope in terms of motorcycle technology and design. The R 100 CS combined classic BMW engineering with modern features that appealed to riders seeking comfort, performance, and durability.

One key factor that makes the R 100 CS desirable is its rarity. Since the model was only produced for a short period (1981-1984), fewer units were manufactured compared to other BMW motorcycles. This limited production has contributed to its scarcity today, making it highly sought after by enthusiasts looking for a piece of BMW history. Many of these motorcycles are now difficult to find in original or excellent condition, adding to their appeal among collectors.

Another factor contributing to its desirability is the enduring reputation of BMW motorcycles for quality and longevity. Many of these bikes have stood the test of time, with some still on the road today, a testament to their durable construction. As a result, the R 100 CS is often seen as a wise investment for collectors, as the value of these bikes has consistently risen over the years.

The R 100 CS also has a special place in the hearts of riders who appreciate the motorcycle's unique design and advanced engineering. Its full fairing, distinctive styling, and the distinctive boxer engine make it an instantly recognizable model among motorcycle enthusiasts. Additionally, the bike's ability to combine sporty performance with touring comfort makes it a versatile machine that appeals to a wide range of riders.

The market value of a restored BMW R 100 CS can vary depending on its condition, mileage, and the quality of the restoration. An expertly restored motorcycle, which may include a complete overhaul of the engine, frame, and components, can fetch a premium price in the collector’s market. Depending on the level of restoration and the rarity of the specific model (such as limited edition versions), prices for a restored R 100 CS can range from $12,000 to $28,000 USD.

In some cases, particularly for bikes with very low mileage or exceptional provenance, the price can exceed these ranges, with some models selling for upwards of $30,000 or more. These values are influenced by the bike’s originality, the quality of the restoration work, and the rarity of the bike in question. Additionally, bikes with unique features, such as factory paint jobs or special editions, can command higher prices.

For those looking to buy an original, unmodified BMW R 100 CS in good condition, prices can be somewhat lower, typically ranging between $8,000 and $10,000 USD. However, as demand for classic BMW motorcycles continues to grow, the value of these bikes is likely to continue increasing, making them a potentially valuable asset for collectors.

The BMW R 100 CS is a motorcycle that has captured the imagination of riders and collectors alike. With its unique blend of performance, comfort, and style, it has become a cult classic within the motorcycle community. Its limited production run, timeless design, and enduring reputation for quality have helped it maintain its desirability in the collector's market.

For collectors seeking a classic motorcycle that combines engineering excellence with historical significance, the BMW R 100 CS is an exceptional choice. Its market value continues to rise, and as one of BMW’s most iconic motorcycles, it remains an excellent investment for those passionate about motorcycle history and craftsmanship.
